The night featured one of the closest finishes in the history of Mason City Motor Speedway.
It featured multiple last-lap passes for feature victories.
It featured one of the one of the more unique trophy designs you’ll see—this one dedicated to Ted Zieman, a racing icon on north Iowa.
And it featured one of the nation’s most established Modified drivers in the country capping the night by pulling his machine into victory lane.
The night ended with a fireworks display, which was fitting considering the action on the track provided fireworks from start to finish.
If you were looking for one of the more memorable nights in recent history at MCMS, this was it.
“This just means a lot to our whole family,” Josh Zieman, the grandson of Ted Zieman, told the crowd after a second-place finish Sunday in the Holley USRA Stock Cars.
The night meant a lot to many people and was dotted with spectacular finishes.
Jared Boumeester didn’t lead in the Out-Pace USRA B-Mod feature until the last lap. He crossed the finish line .031 seconds ahead of Jim Chisholm in a finish that brought the fans to their feet.
The margin wasn’t much different in the opening $2,000-to-win USRA Modified feature. Carter VanDenBerg had led every circuit. That was until lapped traffic aided Corey Dripps as he won by a matter of inches as VanDenBerg tried a crossover move coming out of turn four.
“This place has never been super good to me,” Dripps said. “It’s either been feast or famine.”
It was a feast Sunday. Barely.
VanDenBerg had nearly a straight-away lead at one point before Dripps began to trim the margin in the final few laps.
“I didn’t think I had enough laps,” Dripps said. “I missed my mark with three laps to go and thought that was my opportunity. He just caught lapped traffic too fast.”
In the second USRA Modified feature of the night, Rodney Sanders—a day after claiming the Silver Dollar Nationals in Nebraska—came from the ninth starting spot to park it in victory lane.
The 2013 and 2014 USMTS national champion followed up his dominating performance at the I-80 Speedway Saturday with another one Sunday en route to a $2,000 payday.
Sanders slid past Brandon Hare at the midway point of the feature and beat Hare, Nate Hughes, Aaron Benson and Scott Olson to the finish.
Hare also raced in the Out-Pace USRA B-Mod division and earned a third-place finish there.
Speaking of the USMTS, the tour invades Mason City Motor Speedway Aug. 12.
4x4 in Out-Pace USRA B-Mods: For Boumeester in the Out-Pace USRA B Mods, it was his fourth feature win at MCMS. He came from the 10th starting spot to win Sunday, and he left Chisholm the runner-up once again.
The youngster from Osage now has four runner-up finishes at the half-mile this season. All of those second-place finishes have come with Boumeester winning.
Willert emerges with second victory: Derek Willert knows that winning at Mason City Motor Speedway usually comes with something more than the chunk of cash that goes to the winner.
“They have a lot of neat trophies,” the driver from Rockford said. “Getting this one is pretty cool.”
The trophy, with a Pabst Blue Ribbon beer tap coming out of the top of a heavy wooden barrel, was the reward on this night.
For Willert, it was earned after a thrilling first half of the Cook Racing Supplies USRA Hobby Stock feature where more than a half-dozen drivers were vying for the lead.
“This is the toughest class since I’ve started,” Willert said. “There is a huge group of people that can win any given night.”
On Sunday, it was Willert who emerged victorious for his second feature win of the season as he held off Chanse Hollatz and Matt White.
Green-Zieman 1-2 times 2: It wasn’t easy for Derek Green to reach victory lane twice Sunday night. Over the course of two features, the driver out of Granada, Minn., was again the class of the field. But it wasn’t by much as Josh Zieman made him earn it in each race.
But ultimately, it was Green who has found victory lane in four of his last five Holley USRA Stock Car starts at MCMS.
Zieman now has four runner-up finishes this season at MCMS.
Bryant repeats: It was one of the largest Rookies Rockin' USRA Tuner fields of the year. It ended with a Mason City native finding victory lane.
Ryan Bryant came from the eighth starting position to beat the 12-car field Sunday night.
It was a repeat for Bryant, who was the top finisher last Sunday.
Up next: Presented by Casey’s General Stores, the Lucas Oil ASCS National Sprint Car Series invades Mason City next Sunday, July 29. Holley USRA Stock Cars, Out-Pace USRA B-Mods, Cook Racing Supplies USRA Hobby Stocks and Rookies Rockin' USRA Tuners will also be in action.
General admission is $20 with tickets for seniors 65 and over and members of the military just $17. Juniors ages 13-17 are $15 while kids ages 12 and under get in for free.
The Mason City Motor Speedway is a half-mile clay oval located 5.1 miles east of I-35 at exit 194 on SR 122 (at the North Iowa Fairgrounds).
