Gulbrandson wins before rain cuts Mason City show short

June 17, 2018

With heat races for four classes and one feature race in the books, the rain that had threatened off and on all day finally made good on it’s threats and washed out the final three main events of the program Sunday at the Mason City Motor Speedway.

In search of his fifth straight Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series national title, Dustin Gulbrandson of Sioux Falls, S.D., marched to victory in the Cook Racing Supplies USRA Hobby Stocks shortly before the skies opened up and forced the postponement of the night’s final three features.

"The top side was fast and smooth," Gulbrandson said after the win. "The car handled really well. I haven't drawn very good here in the past, so it was good to start second row."

Clear Lake’s Chanse Hollatz finished in the runner-up position with Derek Willert of Rockford third, 12th-starting Cory Gansen of Clear Lake finishing fourth and 10th-starting Eric Stanton of Carlisle completing the top five.

Prior to getting soaked, defending Iron Man Challenge champion Dan Hovden of Decorah picked up a heat race win in the Out-Pace USRA B-Mods presented by Pace Performance, along with Alex Zwanziger of Nashua and Ben Moudry of Cottage Grove, Minn.

In heat race action for the Holley USRA Stock Cars presented by Medieval Chassis, current series points leader Dillon Anderson of Decorah scored a win, and so did Plymouth’s Andrew Borchardt and defending series champ Derek Green of Granada, Minn.

Matt Oberhelman of Fort Dodge claimed the lone USRA Tuner heat race.

All three rained-out feature races have been postponed to Sunday, July 15, and will kick off that night’s program with a full show featuring all four Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series divisions to follow.

BOONE RIVER BAYOU ON TAP: The biggest race of the summer is coming this Tuesday and Wednesday, June 19-20, with the inaugural Boone River Bayou Dirt Track Championships at the Hamilton County Speedway driven by Spangler Automotive.

Last year's attempted launch was washed out by Mother Nature, and once again the nation’s best drivers in four big classes will be battling for some incredible paydays at the historic half-mile in Webster City, Iowa, this year.

Both nights will also be a part of the popular Iron Man Challenge for Holley USRA Stock Cars and Out-Pace USRA B-Mods with a complete show each night for the Stock Cars, B-Mods and Cook Racing Supplies USRA Hobby Stocks.

Tuesday’s preliminaries will see the Stock Car winner taking home $700, the B-Mod winner gets $600 and the Hobby Stock feature winner will pocket $500 with the top eight finishers in each class locked into Wednesday’s main events.

Tuners will also run a complete show on Tuesday only with a $200 top prize up for grabs for the four-cylinder racers.

Also on Tuesday will be the King of the Hill match races for Stock Cars, B-Mods and Hobby Stocks. Two cars will battle for two green-white-checkered laps with the winner advancing to the next round and the loser packing his bags. The overall winner will take the entire pot in each class.

Big bucks and bragging rights are up for grabs on Wednesday. Stock Cars will compete for a $2,500 top prize while B-Mod drivers will duke it out for $2,000 to win and Hobby Stocks for $1,200 to win.

Opening in July 1910, the Hamilton County Speedway is the oldest speedway in the state of Iowa. In 1938, work began on the current location at the Hamilton County Fairgrounds. The semi-banked half-mile dirt track was completed in the spring of 1939, and the first races were held on the track in September of that year.

The Hamilton County Speedway driven by Spangler Automotive is located off of US 20 at exit 140, then 1.2 miles north, then 0.5 mile east on Bank St., then 0.4 mile south on Bluff St. in Webster City, Iowa (1200 Bluff St, Webster City, IA 50595) at the historic Hamilton County Fairgrounds.
