Schmit, Hovey drive to Iron Man victories at Mason City Motor Speedway
The Christie Door Company Iron Man Challenge built by Medieval Chassis invaded the Mason City Motor Speedway on Sunday for the season finale at North Iowa’s Action Track with Joe Schmit and Troy Hovey invading victory lane.
Schmit led just one orbit in the 25-lap American Racer USRA Stock Car main event but it was the one that counted and worth $600 to the racer from nearby Ventura. Pat Graham, on the other hand, paced the other 24 laps but fell short of his second Iron man trophy of the 2020 campaign.
Behind the points leader from Ankeny, 2018 Iron Man champ Dillon Anderson of Decorah raced from 12th on the starting grid to third at the checkered flag while Mason City’s Travis Shipman held off Doug Keller of Easton, Mo., for the fourth spot.
Joe Schmit won the American Racer USRA Stock Car main event.
In USRA B-Mod action, Troy Hovey of Decorah got the jump on polesitter Brandon Hare of Elma and held the point for the entire 25-lap distance to pocket a $500 paycheck.
Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series national points leader Jim Chisholm of Osage chased the 2013 national champ to the finish line and claimed runner-up honors while Hare—the 2010 and 2011 USRA B-Mod national titlist—held on to finish third.
Eleventh-starting Josh Roney of Postville was fourth and fifth went to George Nordman of Mason City.
One of three drivers from Sioux Falls, S.D., among the top five finishers, Dylan Fitzpatrick won the Mensink Racing Products USRA Hobby Stock feature over Scott Dobel and pocketed $400.
Dustin Gulbrandson (Sioux Falls), Zac Smith and Levi Vander Weide (Sioux Falls) rounded out the top five. Dobel and Smith both make their home in Manly, Iowa.
In other racing action Sunday night, Max Heimbuch of Mason City scored the $200 victory in the USRA Tuners and the $500-to-win Outlaw Mini-Mod main event went to Chase Daniels of Carlisle.
Iron Man champs emerge at Fall Jamboree, USRA Nationals: Just two more weekends remain for the Christie Door Company Iron Man Challenge. USRA B-Mods join the USMTS Modifieds this Friday and Saturday, September 25-26, for the 22nd Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree at the Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn.
Both Stock Cars and B-Mods will make their final stand on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, October 1-3, when the Hamilton County Speedway in Webster City, Iowa, hosts the 7th Annual Summit USRA Nationals with USRA Modifieds, Mensink Racing Products USRA Hobby Stocks and USRA Tuners also in action. Tuners race Friday and Saturday only.
About the Iron Man Challenge: Launched in 2010 as a series for Stock Cars, the USRA B-Mod division was added to the Iron Man lineup in 2011. Between the two classes, 14 different champions have emerged from 19 title chases.
Derek Green of Granada, Minn., grabbed his second Christie Door Company Iron Man Challenge title for the Stock Cars in 2019. Previous Stock Car champions include Dillon Anderson (2018), Green (2017), Kyle Falck (2016), Tom Schmitt (2012, 2015), Mitch Hovden (2013, 2014), Mike Van Genderen (2011) and Nathan Wood (2010).
Jared Boumeester locked down his first crown in the B-Mods last year. Previous B-Mod champions include Dan Hovden (2017, 2018), Andy Bryant (2016), Dakota Foster (2015), Cory Crapser (2013, 2014), Trevor Hunt (2012) and Cayden Carter (2011).
All Christie Door Company Iron Man Challenge events also award national points in the Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series.
