Kay conquers SLMR showdown in Mason City
The Mason City Motor Speedway welcomed the Hoker Trucking SLMR Super Late Model East Series for the first time Sunday and the hearty crowd was witness to some incredible two-, three- and sometimes four-wide battles on the newly-configured action track at the North Iowa Events Center.
Justin Kay of Wheatland was able to maneuver his way to the front from his third-row starting spot and pocketed the $3,000 top prize for his efforts.
Former Malvern Bank SLMR champion Tad Pospisil of Norfolk, Neb., came from eighth to score a runner-up paycheck while Hamilton County Speedway track champion Jason Hahne of Webster City crossed the finish line third.
Fourth went to Jeff Tharp of Sherrill and fifth was Andrew Kosiski of La Vista, Neb. Jeff Aikey, Charlie McKenna, Joel Callahan, Curt Schroeder and Andy Eckrich rounded out the top ten.
In the American Racer USRA Stock Car division, Joe Schmit of Ventura parlayed his pole position into a victory on the 1/3-mile black clay oval.
Nashua’s Jesse Brown won the previous night at the Hamilton County Speedway but had to settle for second place in Sunday’s main event.
Chanse Hollatz of Clear Lake, Andrew Borchardt of Plymouth and Blake Adams of McIntire completed the top five.
Backing up his Christie Door Company Iron Man Challenge win last week, Brandon Maitland of Waterloo scored the victory in the USRA B-Mods.
Elma’s Brandon Hare settled for second followed by a trio of Mason City racers—Josh Appel, George Nordman and Jamie Anderson.
The Mensink Racing Products USRA Hobby Stock feature race went to Scott Dobel of Manly with Chris Hovden of Cresco, Derek Willert of Marble Rock, Zac Smith of Manly and Jeremy Crimmins of Fort Dodge finishing second through fifth, respectively.
The Outlaw Mini-Mods brought another strong field to the Mason City Motor Speedway with former Modified racer Logan Brown coming from the seventh starting spot to pick up the win.
The Clear Lake resident was followed to the checkers by Kamdyn Haggard of Humboldt, Chase Daniels of Carlisle, Nathan Kilwine of Glenville, Minn., and Mason City’s Matt Prehn.
The track will be dark for the Fourth of July weekend but returns to action again on Sunday, July 12, with Gambler's Night featuring USRA Modifieds, American Racer USRA Stock Cars, USRA B-Mods, Mensink Racing Products USRA Hobby Stocks and USRA Tuners.
