Angst, Donlan, Hare, Crimmins, Bryant share spotlight in Mason City Motor Speedway opener
More than a year after rebuilding a new racetrack and then delayed even longer by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Mason City Motor Speedway finally roared to life Sunday for the first race of 2020 and just the second event since the end of the 2018 season.
The North Iowa Fairgrounds came to life with five Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series divisions in action on the newly-configured high-banked 1/4-mile clay oval.
The USRA Modifieds saw Josh Angst of Winona, Minn., power his way from the outside of the third row to take the win over Jason Cummins of New Richland, Minn. Dennis Elliottt of Mt. Ayr was third, Devon Havlik of Iowa Falls finished fourth and Al Hejna of Clear Lake rounded out the top five.
Decorah’s Kevin Donlan raced to victory in the American Racer USRA Stock Car main event by holding off Blake Adams of McIntire. Travis Shipman of Mason City came home third, Luke Sathoff of Jackson, Minn., took fourth and the fifth spot went to Joe Schmit of Ventura.
Action in the USRA B-Mods was intense with two-time Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series national champion 56H Brandon Hare of Elma coming from ninth on the grid to take the win. Polesitter George Nordman of Mason City held on for runner-up honors while the rest of the top five went to Doug McCollough of Webster City, Nate Whitehurst of Mason City and 12th-starting Ty Griffith of Webster City.
Jeremy Crimmins of Fort Dodge beat the field to the checkered flag in the Mensink Racing Products USRA Hobby Stock main event with another former USRA national champ, Chris Hovden of Cresco, finishing second. Eric Stanton of Carlisle was third, Scott Dobel of Manly wound up fourth and Derek Willert of Marble Rock completed the top five.
In the USRA Tuner main event, Mason City’s Ryan Bryant scored another win at the track but his first on the new configuration. Second through fifth were John Gill of Marshalltown, Max Heimbuch of Mason City, Justin Nielson of Lu Verne and Matt Oberhelman of Fort Dodge.
Next Sunday, June 14, the Mason City Motor Speedway hosts “Racing for the Right Reasons” with USRA Modifieds, American Racer USRA Stock Cars, USRA B-Mods, Mensink Racing Products USRA Hobby Stocks and Outlaw Mini Mods on the card. Racing gets underway at 6 p.m.
Then on Thursday, June 18, it is the return of Mayhem! in Mason City when the Summit USMTS National Championship fueled by Casey’s rolls into town along with the Christie Door Company Iron Man Challenge built by Medieval Chassis featuring American Racer USRA Stock Cars and USRA B-Mods. Mensink Racing Products USRA Hobby Stocks and USRA Tuners will also be in action.
The Mason City Motor Speedway is a 1/3-mile clay oval located 5.1 miles east of I-35 at exit 194 on SR 122 (at the North Iowa Fairgrounds).
